Don’t Sweat It, Just Do It — Three Simple Steps to Closing September in Surplus

September is here and it’s the finish of another fiscal year. How did it go? Did your area make its fundraising goal? The month of September can be a great month with donors if you still need to raise more funds to close the fiscal year in a healthy place. Here are three practical steps:

  • Pray and Invite others to do the same “Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always” (1 Chronicles 16:11, NIV). Sounds simple, right? But prayer is often overlooked or missed, especially when there is a time crunch. Yet, prayer is essential to healthy ministry and donor work. We can invite people to give, but God has to move their heart. Let’s ask the Lord to move hearts and provide. His heart is good!
  • Update your Cash Flow, Your List, and Decide Who You Should Meet With“Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:25, ESV). How much is needed and by when? Who can you ask? Update your Cash Flow because you and your donors/potential donors need to know how much is needed by the end of September, and when and where they need to get their gifts. Look at who hasn’t given this fiscal year or who has more capacity to give that could be asked for an additional, time-sensitive, difference-making gift. Always lead with vision (“Here’s how your gift will make a difference”) but be clear about what’s needed. Many times donors don’t give because they simply aren’t aware or don’t think their gift will matter. Who needs to be made aware and told they matter?
  • Have the Conversation“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24, NIV). A great motto for inviting donors to give is “Don’t sweat it, just do it!” So many times we overthink our list and how we are going to have the conversation instead of just having it. Today, pick up the phone, make the call, have the conversation. Go get that cup of coffee with a donor/potential donor. People are honored when you talk to them and keep them in the loop. Engage your donors. Jesus was so good at this. He addressed difficult situations directly. He got messy. He engaged people face to face knowing that His Father’s power was present. Fundraising is always a step of faith! Have faith — God’s heart for your area and ministry is good. God’s heart for your donors is good. God’s ability is big. He controls the answer but calls us to step in faith and invite. Have the conversation and see what God does!

Two by Two

“… the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out two by two.”

— Luke 10:1

As the school year begins across the mission, the excitement grows for reaching students, planning clubs and discipling new believers. With that excitement comes increasingly busy schedules — recruiting and building up leaders and committee, and lots of planning for the year. Along the way, it can be easy to lose sight of why we are here. What are the gifts, talents and passion God has given you to reach lost students with the good news of Jesus? Before we ever reach kids or invite adults to financially support our work in doing so, it’s important to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and His truth.

In Luke 10, the Lord “appointed” 72 people. They were not there coincidentally or accidentally. Jesus chose and equipped them for the calling He had given them. He had great, Kingdom plans for the work they were about to do. In the same way, God has appointed you to love, reach and disciple lost students. He has given you a unique and powerful story — your story of how and why you are with Young Life — and He has given you the opportunity to share that with adults in your community, inviting them to invest in the transformational work of Young Life.

After the disciples were appointed, they were sent out “two by two.” He may have sent them together to protect each other or to encourage each other. Maybe one was strong where the other was weak — they were better together. We are not designed to be lone rangers in life or in ministry. We are designed to be in relationship with God and in community with others. We are designed to be connected to the Vine, two by two with God. We are designed to encourage and empower others — training up and affirming leaders, building up and delegating to committees, empowering student leaders into the gifts you see in them, and inviting donors around the work God is doing in our communities.

In fundraising, we can go two by two by connecting with the Lord before we reach out to or meet with donors, inviting the Lord to give us confidence and trust Him with the outcome. We can also build up a prayer team — inviting them to pray for and with us — two by two. And as we invite donors to give, we bring them into the story God is weaving in our lives and areas, to be an impactful, engaged part of God’s work in Young Life. Here are a few practical ways we can move two by two into fundraising:

  • Develop a prayer team: Invite someone to be your prayer partner, checking in weekly to lift up your donor list, your schedule, your fears/concerns with fundraising.
  • Share your story: Utilize Creative Services on the Staff Resources site to make a personal case statement, which allows you to more easily share your story and vision with adults.
  • Stay connected: Keep in touch with donors throughout the year by thanking and praying for them. Help them see and celebrate the fruits of their investment.
